Format Festival - Derby

Updated: May 8, 2019

Wednesday 20th March - Format Festival in Derby

This week my uni group and I took a trip to Derby to visit & explore Format Festival.

" FORMAT is the UK’s leading international contemporary festival of photography and related media. It organises a year round programme of international commissions, open calls, residencies, conferences and collaborations in the UK and Internationally and welcomes over 100,000 visitors from all over the world to its biennale". (Format Festival website)

Once we arrived in Derby the first part of the festival began at the QUAD which is in Derby's Market place. This is where Gallery One - Mutable, Multiple was. There was a range of very different and unique pieces of art & photography exhibited in this first gallery. We were then given a map of the other exhibitions that were dotted around Derby and left to go view them in groups. Below are pictures of the first gallery & map.

From the QUAD we went to a selection of other gallery's: the Market Hall, Furthest from the Sea on Strand Arcade which held The Brexit Workshop, Tramshed in the Strand Arcade and Derby Museum & Art Gallery which held the White Heat of British Industry, 1950s-60s: Photographs by Maurice Broomfield. The work in each of these galleries/exhibitions displayed such a diverse range of talent and creativity throughout photography.

Below are some images of the galleries listed.
